You’ll be wearing this jacket way more than packing it, but you can squish it down to about 7 by 5 inches in its own pocket. We liked the clean cuffs (they have Lycra inserts to block wind) which play nicely with other layers and gloves. A sturdy, two-way zipper let us vent from top or bottom and access a climbing harness. Five pockets (two interior) store winter must-haves. The hood fits over a climbing helmet, but also adjusts snugly over a beanie. “It’s an ideal outer layer when you’re grinding hard uphill in deep cold, and it makes a low-bulk midlayer under a shell,” one tester says.

It’s the full recipe at work: Polartec Alpha, an insulation with thousands of tiny perforations that allow body heat to escape, is sandwiched between a wicking polyester liner and tough-but-supple nylon shell.
Outdoor research uberlayer jacket skin#
This jacket became a second skin for one tester who wore it nonstop for four days of ice climbing in New Hampshire, then around-the-clock on a four-day summer climb of Mt. All in all though, that's a minor inconvenience for me and I still love grabbing this puffy anytime.Breathable when it needs to vent, warm when it needs to insulate. Perhaps keep the interior pockets above the exterior ones, or just reduce the size of the pocket and/or provide stiffer mesh to reduce the bouncing. I'd rather have offset exterior/interior pockets. Granted, I could have fewer things on my person, but I don't have all that much stuff and it bothers me. Also, the inner mesh pockets seem great at first, but if I have something in the front pocket (like a phone) and then another item in an inner pocket (like a wallet), it gets really bulky and the mesh has a bit too much stretch so things bounce around a lot and is annoying while walking. I've already torn some sizable holes in it while hiking through in el Potrero Chico (admittedly a thorny place, but I was bummed that it tore so much). One downside I've noticed are that it could do with being more rugged to thorny environments. This is now my go to puffy for pretty much all occasions. And the hood is oversized and awesome for a helmet but the wire brim it has needs a redesign, it's too small and just a tad in my peripheral vision sometimes.Īs a Texan, i was blown away that I could get by in 20F weather with a tee shirt and this micro puffy. The pack in its own pocket feature doesn't work, the fits too tight. Had I the budget for only one of the two I would choose the uberlayer.Ģ small complaints, not significant but worth noting. For extended sub zero temperature I still defer to my "michelin man" parka but this is a far more useful piece. I belive that when properly layered this jacket can match the parka most days.

I went for high loft down and large baffles for maximum heat. I have been a belay parka man my whole life. Forget the rains shell and get caught in down pour? Well at least you are still warm even if you are a little wet. need it water proof? throw a rain shell on top. So versitile, need it warmer? put a flece under. The main selling point is breathability like I have never seen but with decent wind and rain resistance. Good long body and arms, some room to throw a midlayer under but not too much This is probably the most diverse and well used jacket I own. I never expect a mid layer to be fully waterproof so I still think it deserves a 5 star rating. On a good note, it dried after the storm super quick and kept me warm. It got pretty wet and luckily I had a rain shell to put over it. Building on the glowing reception of our Uberlayer Jacket, we ratcheted up the breathability while cutting the weight a little more to build the Ascendant Collection'Pertex Microlight movement-mirroring stretch fabric and Polartec Alpha insulation create the perfect combination for skinning uphill, belaying, or layering under a ski jacket on cold days at the resort. I got stuck in a hail/ rain storm this summer on a mountain and I would not exactly call it waterproof in extreme conditions like that. I even used it in Hawaii on a hike in the big island when light rain came in.

I wear this around town all the time and have it in my bag on any bike or hike. Come spring skiing i completely removed the shell and went just with this. I use this as a mid layer during ski season. I'm 6'3 and have a large and it fits very well. I guess that's a true indication as to how popular it is. I checked every day for like a month until it showed up. It took me forever to actually get one because they never had the color or size I wanted.
